December 5, 2006: Members of the
Losing Team in the Chicken Barbeque ticket sales competition served breakfast to
the winning team. Congratulations to TA Ward and his Team. TA Was
presented with the Foghorn Leghorn Trophy. Coral Stengel was initiated as

November 28, 2006: Ray Dennin spoke about Verizon's new concept of bringing broadband fiber-optic networks into households and small offices. These networks permit speeds of 30 to 100 Megabits per second which is significantly faster than cable Internet. Our guest was Coral Stengel, potential new member.

November 21, 2006: USC High School seniors Anna Kate Babnick and Melissa Kaduck gave a presentation on the activities of the High School Interact Club. The club has sponsored and organized a series of charitable events that benefit both local and national groups of needy people. Anna Kate was also the lucky winner of the 50/50 Jackpot, with Melissa drawing the winning ticket. Guests were ADG Dennis Crawford, Don Paterni and Coral Stengel, Realtor and potential new member.

November 14, 2006: We celebrated a successful Chicken Barbeque fundraiser with a dinner and party for our volunteers at Al's Cafe.

November 7, 2006: Club Assembly.
We initiated Dan Rocco and Bill Hulin as new members, proposed by President
Scott and Brian Schill. Pete Muck gave a brief overview of his profession as the
controller of a company that produces close-captioning for television
broadcasts. Brian Schill offered out-of-the box ideas on adding and, more
importantly, retaining new members by involving them in club activities.

October 31, 2006: Rotarian John Hopper from the Washington Rotary Club gave a presentation about Habitat for Humanity, a Christian ministry that raises money and provides volunteer labor for housing projects around the world.

October 10, 2006: We initiated Greg
Saltzman and Pete Lenneman as new members, using a new initiation ceremony
thought up by Brian Schill. Our club is growing - please congratulate Pete

July 25, 2006: Vince Gastgeb, Allegheny County Councilman from Bethel Park, discussed the experience with the new electronic voting machines. Overall, voters and administrators were pleased with the new system.

July 18, 2006: Penny Layne from Paws With A Cause and her Labrador, Fawn, came to demonstrate the skills of a trained assistance dog. Fawn can help open doors, pick up dropped objects such as keys, coins, bills, credit cards etc. and help a wheel-chair-bound person with many skills. She can even pull a bedspread over a person to keep her warm. Many Assistance Dogs have been credited with saving their owners' lives.

June 13, 2006: Rotarian John Gisleson spoke on the controversy about the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at the Upper St. Clair School District. The School Board had voted to end the program but re-instated it following a lawsuit brought by the parents of the students affected by the cancellation.

May 23, 2006: Jennifer Malecki, prospective new member, spoke about Promoting Health and Wellness in the Community. Scott Churchill introduced our speaker.

May 16, 2006: John Walsh, owner of
the Bethel Bakery, spoke about his
family business and the changes it underwent during its long history.
John's father Morris founded the bakery in 1955. Today it specializes in
making cakes and pastries for all occasions including weddings. Orders can
be placed from the web site which offers many choices of custom decorated baked
goods.
Jennifer Malecki was our guest and potential new member.

May 9, 2006:
Rotarian Jim Lombardo presented a delegation from Thailand who is currently
visiting Upper St. Clair Schools. Principal Dr. Kanda Moore and Teacher
Ms. Sunantha introduced their award-winning schools. USC parent Luck Groves, a
Thai native, helped organize the program.
Also visiting were German GSE scholars Nicol Herholz and Verena Meinert.
Nicol spent a vocational day with Rotarian Brian Schill at the USC Police
Department and Verena went on to visit Mt. Lebanon High School.

May 2, 2006: Rotarian Mike Lloyd gave his Mushroom talk, an annual entertainment event at our club. Each year Mike comes a bit closer in telling us exactly where the good stuff grows only to hold back the final details. We heard it's near Bethel Church Road - wonder if it has something to do with what they're smoking while driving along...

Superintendent Dr. Tom Knight spoke to us about his new position and the challenges and opportunities at the helm of the Bethel Park School District. April 18, 2006: Our speaker was John Swiatek. He spoke to us about the Washington "Wild Things" Baseball Club. The Wild Things play outside Washington PA at Falconi Field. This is minor league baseball with a family touch and seats that are affordable and close to the action.

March 14, 2006: Judy Neely from AL-ANON spoke about alcohol and drug addiction and the family related services that her organization renders to support families of addiction victims that struggle dealing with the addicts.

March 7, 2006: Was our annual Evening of Giving with many of the charitable organizations present that receive donations from us: Carol Popp and Cindy Scherer from SHIM, Shirley Fierro from the Washington City Mission, Tim Ishman from the YMCA Camp Aim, Barbara Giglotti for the YMCE Camp Kon-O-Kwee, Batty Becker from the Pregnancy Resource Center of the South Hills, Carol and Tom Ritouski from the early Learning Center, Cindy Gilch and Dave Matta from Rebuilding Pittsburgh and ADG Milt Hamel representing the Rotary Foundation.

February 21, 2006: Our speaker was State Representative John Maher. John gave us a brief legislative update about lobbying legislation and the "right-to-know" law reforms for Pennsylvania.

February 14, 2006: Valentine's Day
speaker was Bob Titus, pastor at Mt. Lebanon Presbyterian Church. Bob
spoke about adopting children with the help of the American Worldwide Adoption
Association. The association holds seminars and provides information to
guide prospective adoptive parents through the formalities.
Our guests were spouses Peg Findle, Renee Brune and Don Paterni, Pete Muck and
incoming ADG Bob Brindley from the
Forest Hills club. Bob presented Past President Susan Hicks with a special
award for her outstanding Rotary spirit at the District Assembly golf outing.

January 31, 2006: Today's guests were Ty Freyvogel and Dave Young from Freyvogel Communications. Ty explained how important personal relationships are for successful business relationships - people need to "give" first to promote a relationship before they can "get" benefits back from it.

January 24, 2006: Today's program on the Upper St. Clair Regional Environmental Education Center (REEC), located in Boyce-Mayview. The program was presented by Rick Jacobs, the Chairman of the Board of the REEC. The REEC is preparing a new season of outdoor education to school students as well as adults. Rick pointed out the importance of teaching our community respect for nature and its delicate balance between growth and recycling waste products such as leaves and dead wood into fertilizer for new plants.

January 10, 2006: Doug Miller and Marlene Hagerty gave a presentation about the Family Hospice that provides palliative care to terminally ill patients. The caritative work of the Hospice is of great help to both the patients and also their families who are often overwhelmed with caring for their loved ones knowing that they will lose them. We pinned James Lombardo, superintendent of Upper St. Clair Schools, as our 45th member. Congratulations, Jim!

January 3, 2006: Club Assembly. Our camera donations have arrived in Iraq and we are expecting a few pictures back. The commander of the unit sent us a flag flown over their camp as a thank-you for keeping our soldiers in our thoughts. Funds raised from our 2005 Chicken Barbeque got us back to the funding levels of 2003 so that we are able to make considerably higher donations again.
