May 22, 2007: Steve Tartai from PA One Call provided information about having utility lines identified prior to digging to prevent serious accidents.  You can call 811 to find out about having buried lines marked by the utilities to be safe.

May 15, 2007: Dave Rettig, president of the National Character Education Foundation was our speaker.  The mission of the NCEF is to promote the benefits of good character to students, parents, and the community.

May 8, 2007: Upper St. Clair Township Forester Walter Jarosh gave a presentation about the walking trails in Boyce Mayview Park.  This 500-acre nature area has 10 miles of various trails and represents a habitat for a number of unique plant and animal species such as Ohio buckeyes, bobcats and coyotes.  Numerous rare birds are regularly seen here as well.

May 1, 2007: Club assembly. We pinned Scott Harper as a new member - welcome Scott!  Pat Findle led the three USC/BP clubs to another successful Rebuilding event on April 28.  We fixed basement windows, a garage door, painted indoors, repaired plumbing and did landscaping and driveway work.  The steady rain spolied the outside painting work so we will have to re-group to get that job done.  Volunteers please contact Pat.

April 24, 2007: We heard about Mushroom Meister Mike's Management of Morels.  Of course, part of his strategy is never to reveal any information that could actually lead us to finding a morel or a chicken of the woods.  Sort of like the recipe for Bush's beans - perhaps we need to talk to his dog....?

April 17, 2007: Amber Capra spoke about chiropractic care and the importance of treating your spine properly.  Amber advocates exercise, good posture and drinking enough water to keep muscles, discs and tendons hydrated.  Ed Harmon from the evening club, Mike Silvestri from the McMurray club and Scott Harper were our guests.

April 10, 2007: Kara Rutowski, Director of Development at the Early Learning Institute, provided an update on ELI Activities.  The ELI begins supporting special needs children soon after birth and as soon as the need is recognized.  They have been providing services since 1958, and our club has supported the ELI for over 15 years by providing gifts for the Easter and Christmas parties and through donations.  Scott Harper attended as a prospective new member.

April 3, 2007: Club Assembly.  Pat Findle spoke about the Rebuilding Pittsburgh project where we will rebuild a house in Bethel Park with an investment of $3,500 in club donations and about $10,000 in labor from members of all three Upper St. Clair and Bethel Park Rotary Clubs.  We will help keep a neighbor warm, dry and safe in their house.

March 27, 2007: We had a phone conversation with Chief Petty Officer Jim Piner in Iraq.  Jim is part of the unit that received the video cameras donated by our club.  Soldiers use them in private booths and are taped reading letters and books to their loved ones.  Our camera donation has made a big difference to the troops, enabling them to send meaningful video communications home to their families.

March 20, 2007: Our speaker was Mark Selekman.  Mark is a certified personal fitness trainer and gave us an overview of exercise and nutrition requirements for a healthy lifestyle.

March 13, 2007: Keven Sell, president of the Volunteer Pilots Association was our guest.  The VPA coordinates flights across the U.S. for sick patients to be transported to treatment facilities, donor organs and medications to be shipped for emergency needs and other emergency supply shipments.  Keven was involved in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and scheduled volunteer air support for the victims.

March 7, 2007: We celebrated our annual Evening of Giving at the Valley Brook CC.  President Scott made charitable giving presentations to SouthWinds, the South Hills Pregnancy Resource Center, the Washington City Mission South Hills Interfaith Ministries, the Early Learning Center and to the YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee. 

February 27, 2007: Our speaker was Tim Ishman from YMCA and his subject was Camp AIM/Partner With Youth. Tim gave the different activities that is in the planning stage and how important it is working with Rotary.

February 20, 2007: Our speakers were Randy Castriota and Larry Chisholm from the Gym of Future Champs and their subject was providing young men with training and facilities for boxing as a way to stop crime and using drugs.

February 13, 2007: Was club assembly.  President Scott Churchill discussed general Rotary thoughts.

February 6, 2007: Was Club Assembly.  We discussed charitable giving and related issues.

January 30, 2007: Rotarian Pete Lenneman gave a presentation on information destruction - it is necessary to securely destroy obsolete company files especially if they contain personal information.  Often, thieves will use improperly disposed files to commit identity theft.

January 23, 2007: Carol Glock from Health Hope Network spoke about Stroke Awareness - stokes are the #3 cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States.

January 23, 2007: Lila Prezioso spoke on behalf of Sean Roche, a senior at USC High School who was diagnosed with Restrictive Cardiomyopathy a rare heart disease and is in immediate need of a heart transplant. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association has estimated that Sean will need to raise $65,000 for these different expenses. USC High School has a Hotline for Donations – 412-851-2833.

January 2, 2007: Was Club Assembly. VP Jim Yusko reported that the Charitable Giving Committee is considering charitable donations totaling $21,000.  This generous giving  was made possible from the proceeds of our 2006 Chicken Barbeque fundraiser.
